What are Essential Skills?

Your Future Starts Here!

connect2SKILLS was created to help employers in Manufacturing and the Hospitality & Tourism industry access job ready, skilled workers. Being a good employee means developing your essential skills. Employers tell us they want employees who are skilled in;

  • Listening
  • Communicating
  • Critical thinking
  • General Document Use
  • Technology
  • Teamwork

What are the nine Essential Skills? The Government of Canada has identified nine key Essential Skills for the workplace.

  • Numeracy
  • Oral Communication

These skills are “essential” because they are foundational skills.   We all have different levels of skills in each of these areas, and through training and experience we can improve our skills to meet the needs of our current or future job.
